Joint Nutritionist Q&A

HELPING MY HORSE WITH STIFLE ISSUES
Customer: “My 15-year-old paint gelding has chronic stifle clicking and I have tried everything that has scientific based info from vets to actual scientist, nothing has given this boy any relief. He is a big horse and I think was used way to hard before I got him. He is on mixed hay, some Timothy pellets, small amount, as a daily treat with ground flax seed, and a probiotic, we have tried shots for inflammation, vets suggestion, which did nothing. He has dry pasture access always, never stall bound”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Sorry to hear about your gelding. If he were my horse, I would try adding our product Joint Guard to your current feed regime. It is a very powerful joint supplement with chondroitin, glucosamine, MSM, and hyaluronic acid. We have had great success with it helping horses with chronic arthritis.
NEEDING TO ADD A JOINT SUPPLEMENT
Customer: “Our big Quarter Horse that we put on Super Weight Gain about six months ago, finally looks like a horse. I really wish I had some before and after pictures for you guys but we were so concerned with bringing him back after almost losing him last 4th of July, that I didn’t do that. Anyway, he is healthier than he has been in the six years we have had him. But back to my question. I am not sure if it is due to what happened last summer or just his age with his now added healthy weight but when he gets up from resting. Whether it is sitting in what Bailee calls “Unicorn style” Meaning with his legs tucked under him, or lying flat out. He is extremely stiff in muscles and joints. He will walk out of it and once he has moved around, he can be extremely athletic. He is on 4 oz of Super weight Gain and ½ gal of Purina Senior twice a day plus hay. Do you think Equine Joint Guard would help or what would you suggest? I know how he feels but I can get to Advil or Aleve…..”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Great to hear your horse is looking so much healthier! Super weight gain is an amazing product. Sorry to hear he is getting stiff as he ages. You have a couple of different options with him. You could keep him on the super weight gain and add the joint guard, which would really help to lubricate his joints and help him out. Joint Guard will provide him with 6600 mg of glucosamine, 1000 mg of chondroitin, 100 mg of HA, 2500 mg methionine, and 6600 mg of MSM in each 4 oz dose. These are massive doses and are one of the very highest on the market. Another option that might be simpler for you is to feed trifecta. Now that he is at a good weight you could replace the super weight gain with 8 oz of Trifecta. It will provide him with the vitamin-package pack that the super weight gain provides. It also has prebiotics and probiotics like super weight gain (just not quite as high of levels). In addition, it provides a hoof supplement, and powerful joint supplement. The joint support in trifecta provides 5000 mg glucosamine, 5000 mg methionine, 5000 mg MSM, and 50 mg of HA. Trifecta is what we feed all of our horses. It will be the most economical for you to feed. However, if you feed Trifecta for a couple months and he still seems a little stiff you could then switch him over to the super weight gain and joint guard for even higher levels of joint support.
WHAT SHOULD I FEED AN ARTHRITIC 4H HORSE?
Customer: “I live in southwest Washington (state). My daughters 18-year-old gelding quarter horse get vitamins/supplements with organic selenium due to being stiff (vet recommended after coming up lame a few years ago & needing hock injections). His hooves crack something awful as well. We shoe him on all 4 & are using shoes with clips now, but they are still terrible. Hoof oil helps, but is only temporary. Our farrier specifically recommended your brand of supplements with the biotin in it. Is there a way to combine the two so that I only have to purchase one supplement? Which product do you recommend? This horse is my 13-year-old daughters love. She uses him for 4H & does a few open shows. He is just performance. She’s been riding him for 5 1/2 years.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: We have two great combination products that would make it very simple to feed and get your vitamin/mineral supplement and hoof supplement in one. The first one is Mega Dose, which contains a full dose of our vitamin/mineral supplement (Horse Guard) with organic selenium, and a full dose of one of our hoof supplements (Hoof Guard) that contains 32 mg of biotin, as well as a probiotic supplement to help with gut function. It is fed at 4 ounces a day to a 1000lb horse. With your daughter’s horse being older, you may consider Trifecta. Trifecta also contains a full dose of Horse Guard, Hoof Guard, and probiotic supplement. In addition, it also contains a very powerful joint supplement with 5000 mg of glucosamine, 5000 mg of MSM, and 100 mg of hyaluronic acid. The joint support would help him combat arthritis. We feed Trifecta to all 15 of our horses, and it has done wonders to help our older horses’ joints. It is fed at 8 ounces a day to a 1000lb horse. Hope this helps and good luck with him. Being a girl that grew up with horses my whole life, I understand the love that a young girl can have for her horse. I am lucky enough to still have two of my mares that I got at 12 years old. I still even compete on one of them!
SUPPLEMENTING MY ARTHRITIC HORSE
Customer: “My horse has extremely bad arthritis. I have him on Trifecta and am considering adding Joint Guard to help him out as much as I can. Would I be overdoing the joint support if I did this? Should I consider just switching to Joint Guard?”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Sorry to hear about your horse. I would recommend keeping him on Trifecta and adding the Joint Guard. There are so many things in Trifecta that really help an older horse out like the probiotics. You don’t need to worry about getting too high of levels of any of the nutraceuticals. I think the addition of Joint Guard should help him with his stiffness.

I need some of your product for my horse’s stifle. I just ordered fish oil. He is not bad. How long of a ride can you do if a horse is somewhat bad? My friend rides her horse 12 to 15 miles. Is that to much ? She doesn’t even do any of the exercises on him. Ty
