What Should I Feed An Arthritic 4H Horse?

“I live in southwest Washington (state). My daughters 18 year old gelding quarter horse get vitamins/supplements with organic selenium due to being stiff (vet recommended after coming up lame a few years ago & needing hock injections). His hooves crack something awful as well. We shoe him on all 4 & are using shoes with clips now, but they are still terrible. Hoof oil helps, but is only temporary. Our farrier specifically recommended your brand of supplements with the biotin in it. Is there a way to combine the two so that I only have to purchase one supplement? Which product do you recommend? This horse is my 13 year old daughters love. She uses him for 4H & does a few open shows. He is just performance. She’s been riding him for 5 1/2 years.”

Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella:
We have two great combination products that would make it very simple to feed and get your vitamin/mineral supplement and hoof supplement in one. The first one is Mega Dose, which contains a full dose of our vitamin/mineral supplement (Horse Guard) with organic selenium, and a full dose of one of our hoof supplements (Hoof Guard) that contains 32 mg of biotin, as well as a probiotic supplement to help with gut function. It is fed at 4 ounces a day to a 1000lb horse. With your daughter’s horse being older, you may consider Trifecta. Trifecta also contains a full dose of Horse Guard, Hoof Guard, and probiotic supplement. In addition, it also contains a very powerful joint supplement with 5000 mg of glucosamine, 5000 mg of MSM, and 100 mg of hyaluronic acid. The joint support would help him combat arthritis. We feed Trifecta to all 15 of our horses, and it has done wonders to help our older horses’ joints. It is fed at 8 ounces a day to a 1000lb horse. Hope this helps and good luck with him. Being a girl that grew up with horses my whole life, I understand the love that a young girl can have for her horse. I am lucky enough to still have two of my mares that I got at 12 years old. I still even compete on one of them!
