Trifecta: Product Q&A

CAN I FEED SUPER GAIN AND TRIFECTA TOGETHER?
Customer: “Can I mix your Super Gain with the Trifecta? Both are amazing products but I don't want to overload. I need the joint supplement from trifecta on a mare and also want to get some weight on her asap and I LOVE the Super Gain. Also, I know it hasn't been tested on mares before but wondering the safety of feeding the Trifecta to bred mares. I have had friends use it on theirs with no issues but just want to make sure before giving to my aged broody who really needs the support. Thank you so much for your time and I SWEAR by your products they are always my go to for any of my needs!”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Great to hear that you love our products, as much as we do! I wouldn’t recommend feeding Super Weight Gain and Trifecta together because they both contain a full dose of Horse Guard, so you would be double dosing on their vitamin and mineral needs. What I recommend is feeding your mare Super Weight Gain until she gets to the desired weight and then switching her to Trifecta. If you would like to get her joint support while feeding the Super Weight Gain you could add a dose of our Joint Guard, which would help to specifically address any joint issues and not double dose her vitamins and minerals. When considering Trifecta for a pregnant mare, you are perfectly safe. I actually have a 23-year-old broodmare that has been fed Trifecta through both her entire performance and reproductive life, and it keeps her and her babies happy and healthy (she is in foal with another future rock star). Thank you so much for your kind words about our company. We are a family-owned company that takes pride in our products, so we love to hear success stories.
A COMPLETE FEED TO PAIR WITH TRIFECTA?
Customer: I really believe in the Trifecta product. Might you suggest a safe “complete ” pellet food source to use in concert with Trifecta. A pelleted food source that keeps the selenium levels safe for a 21 active horse who events at a low level. My horse has access to a low protein hay ad-lib , as well as a pasture grass for 6-8 hours per day in Pullman WA. Pasture and hay are from same source. Both low protein but plentiful. Previously my horse was on a non-vitamin pelleted food source for grass-based hay in western WA. Thus, Trifecta was not providing too much selenium, but great supplement support. The Western WA facility offered hay with a higher protein content. Trying to keep using Trifecta without overdoing the selenium or anything else I should be aware of in his Eastern WA home is important to me. Pellet Options in new Eastern WA facility are open, but the majority of the horses are on Purina Strategy or Purina Senior or Purina Ultium.
Answer from Equine Nutritionist, Del Johnson: Thanks for the question. Selenium is toxic at levels of 30 mg per day for a 1000 lb. horse. Trifecta provides 3 mg per day so there is a lot of safety in combining other feed ingredients. Most feed products are formulated at 1 mg per day if you are feeding the highest feed recommendation. Typically you don’t need to worry about a toxic level when you are adding forage and grain….and even salt that contains selenium. I suggest that you find a forage source to complement the pasture and add enough simple grain to keep the body condition that you desire. We vary the quality of the forage to keep body condition and feed very little grain, just enough to combine with the Trifecta. If you use a Purina product as the grain source just use enough so that you can top dress with Trifecta because Trifecta provides all vitamins and trace minerals required.
A SUPPLEMENT FOR OLDER HORSE
Customer: “Can you recommend a supplement to keep my 22-year-old gelding feeling energetic and good?”
Answer from Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Dr. Kelsey Johnson Nonella: I would recommend feeding your gelding Trifecta. It will provide him a vitamin/mineral supplement, gut support, hoof and hair supplement, and joint supplement all in one dose. The vitamin/mineral supplement is crucial for optimal overall health in your gelding. The prebiotics and probiotics will help to ensure his gastrointestinal tract well. As horses getting older they start losing their ability to digest as well. Biotin will help his feet to stay strong and his coat looking good. Finally, the joint support includes 5000 mg of glucosamine and MSM, as well as 100 mg of hyaluronic acid. These potent levels of these ingredients will help him to keep feeling young.
IS THERE ENOUGH SELENIUM IN TRIFECTA, THERE IS NOT IN MY PLATINUM PERFORMANCE FOR MY AREA
Customer: “Is there enough Selenium in Trifecta for horses in a Selenium deficient areas? I am feeding Platinum Performance now and even though there is Selenium in that supplement, it is not enough for this area in Northeastern California.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Yes, 8 ounces of Trifecta contains 3 mg of 100% organic selenium, which are adequate amounts of selenium to horses in extremely deficient areas. I think that you will be extremely satisfied with Trifecta to only provide your horse with adequate selenium levels, but also provide hoof, joint, and gut support.
DOSAGE OF TRIFECTA TO MY QUARTER HORSES
Customer: “Hello. I love trifecta. I have used it on every horse I have had and the results speak for themselves. Right now I have two quarter horses. One is around 1250lbs and the other is 1224lbs. How many ounces should I feed them. The cups that come in the bag are confusing because I don’t find them to be accurate, and there is a different size cup now. Thank you for your time. Best product ever!!!!”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Great to hear you love the product as much as we do! Trifecta is to be fed at 4 oz per 500 pounds, so with your two quarter horses I would recommend 10 oz to each of them. So sorry for the confusion in the measuring cups. In trying to better serve our customers we are in the process of transiting our measuring cups to ultimately have a sturdier more accurate measurement, so thank you for bearing with us while you make this change. If you weight your feed that is great, which allows you to manage their diet very accurately.
FEEDING MULTIPLE SUPPLEMENTS TOGETHER?
Customer: “I am already feeding horse guard and hoof and hair guard. i am just wondering about starting on the joint guard in addition to these. but i am wondering if they will get too much of something if i add this supplement can you give me some advice?”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Great to hear you are taking great care of your horse. You are perfectly fine to feed a joint supplement in addition to Horse Guard and Hoof and Hair Guard. However, you may consider replacing Horse Guard, Hoof and Hair Guard, and an additional joint supplement with Trifecta. Trifecta not only has a full dose of Horse Guard; it has a hoof supplement (32 mg of biotin, zinc, methionine, and MSM), gut support (prebiotics, probiotics, and live yeast cultures), and powerful joint supplement (5000 mg glucosamine, 5000 mg MSM, and 100 mg hyaluronic acid). Trifecta is an amazing product that helps to simplify feeding. In 2 scoops (8 oz) a day to a 1000 lb horse, your horse gets all of this support. We have fifteen head of performance horses ourselves that all receive Trifecta and do absolutely amazing on it.
NEED A BOOST FOR HOOVES
Customer: “I have had my older gelding on Horse Guard, a joint supplement, and Sand Clear for years. Recently his hooves don’t seem to be in very good shape, so I think I should add a hoof supplement, but I want to keep it as simple as possible. What would you recommend?”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella:Sorry to hear about your horse’s hooves. Sounds like you take great care of him. I think Trifecta would be a great change for him. It will be able to replace all of your current supplements and also provide him with a hoof supplement as well. You will want to do your monthly Sand Clear still, however. Trifecta is absolutely amazing. It is what we feed all 15 of our horses, and really helps out my 25-year-old mare.
CAN I FEED TRIFECTA TO GOATS
Customer: “Can Trifecta Horse Guard be used with goats?”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella:Although Trifecta is only labeled for horses it is perfectly fine for goats. You will just want to adjust the dosage to the weight of the goats. So if the goats weigh 100 lbs feed each goat a 1/5 of the scoop that is included.
CONSIDERING SWITCHING FROM PLATINUM TO HORSE GUARD PRODUCTS
Customer:I’ve fed Platinum Performance for years. I’d like to know some comparative info about your products.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: In all our vitamin-mineral supplement products what really sets our products apart from others is that they contain 3mg of organic selenium. I did extensive research on selenium for my doctorate, and many studies in the last ten years have found that 3mg of Se vs 1mg of Se aids in higher immune response, and reduces oxidative stress. Our basic product, Horse Guard, contains 3 mg of selenium, 4.5 mg biotin, along with a complete vitamin-mineral supplement, and prebiotics and probiotics in a 2 oz dose. . We also have great hoof supplements: Hoof Guard contains 32 mg of biotin, 400 mg of zinc, 5,000 mg of methionine, and 5,000 mg of MSM, while Biotin Hoof Blast contains 100 mg of biotin, and same amounts of zinc, methionine, and MSM. Our product designed for performance horses, Trifecta, has a full dose of Horse Guard, has full dose of Hoof Guard, higher levels of prebiotics and probiotics, and a joint supplement that contains 5,000 mg of glucosamine, 5,000 mg of MSM, and 100 mg Hyaluronic Acid in an 8 oz dose.
I NEED TO ADD SOME JOINT SUPPORT TO MY HORSE GUARD?
Customer: “I have used your product for years but want to make sure I am doing right by the product I am using or do I need something else. I feed endurance horses, one is a hard keeper other not so much. I use the horse guard vitamin. What I was wondering is should I use another version in conjunction with the horse guard vitamin for these guys? I do not use joint supplements I feed fresh ground flax 4-8 ounces daily. free choice grass hay and 24/7 pasture.”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Thank you very much for your loyalty to Horse Guard. We truly believe we produce the best equine supplements on the market. Horse Guard is taking care of all your horses’ basic vitamin/mineral needs. However, if you want to consider a product that has a hoof supplement and joint supplement I would switch to Horse Guard’s Trifecta. It not only contains a full dose of Horse Guard, but also has a complete dose of our product Hoof Guard (32 mg of biotin, zinc, methionine, and MSM), probiotics and live yeast cultures for hindgut support, and a very powerful joint supplement (5000 mg of glucosamine and MSM, and 100 mg of hyaluronic acid). There has been a lot of research done that shows starting oral joint support before the onset of arthritis is more effective than treating after arthritis has developed. With your high-performance horses, I think this would be very beneficial for them. All 15 of our high-performance horses are on Trifecta, and it has helped maintain healthy joints in our older horses.
LYSINE IN TRIFECTA
Customer: “I have a WA Region 9yr Old Morgan Trail Horse – easy keeper & healthy! 1) My WA horse is on local hay, oats, black oil sunflower seeds & trifecta. I am reading a lot about Lysine – and it seems our horses need this but it is not in Trifecta. Why not? 2) My horse has been on this diet for over a year and his hoofs and coat/main look great but he is always tender footed on the trail. Should I add anything in to help out? PS Love your product as we have dapples all year round!”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Thank you for the questions. It sounds like you are taking great care of your horse. Lysine is the first-limiting essential amino acid for growing horses. In a typical horse’s diet, lysine comes from their 60-70% from forage and 30-40% from concentrates. So, in young horses it is important to high quality, high protein feeds which are high in lysine, such as alfalfa or soybean meal. However, it is important to note that unless the mature horse is on low-quality grass hay they will get plenty of lysine from forage and concentrates. Also in your case, feeding the BOSS(which are high in amino acids, although not as high in lysine as soybean meal) should ensure that your horse is not deficient in lysine. As far as your horse’s hooves are concerned, I’m glad to hear that he is looking great. Unfortunately, some horses are more tendered footed than others. Nutritionally, it sounds like you are doing an amazing job with your horse. I would consider some kind of booties for him when you take him out, so his sole can have some added protection.
WHICH FEED IS RIGHT FOR MY HORSE?
Customer: “My friend highly recommends your Horse Guard product with pre- and probiotics. My 24-YO mare is an easy keeper. I recently moved her to western South Dakota where she shares a pasture with 7 horses that will soon be supplemented with alfalfa-grass hay. She has significant arthritis in her hocks, for which Colo State univ’s vet lab suggested that I supplement her with Platinum Performance CJ. Would your product(s) be something I would give my horse in addition to the CJ?”
Answer by Ph.D. Equine Nutritionist, Kelsey Johnson Nonella: Thank you for the question. I would not recommend adding Horse Guard to the Platinum Performance CJ because they both contain a vitamin/mineral supplement. However, you have a couple of options. After you finish the bucket of Platinum I would recommend you switch to our product, Trifecta. Trifecta has a daily dose of our vitamin/mineral supplement, Horse Guard, in addition to three other supplements. It has a powerful gut support with prebiotics, probiotics, and live yeast cultures, a complete hoof and hair supplement (32 mg of biotin, zinc, methionine, and MSM), and a powerful joint supplement (5000 mg glucosamine, 5000 mg MSM, and 100 mg hyaluronic acid) which would address the arthritis in your mare’s hocks like the Platinum. If you are satisfied with the Platinum product, but would like to add gut support to your horse’s feed regime I would recommend feeding Gut Guard along with your Platinum product.

I am looking for a weight gain supplement and a skin/hair supplement for my Nigerian Dwarf Goat doe. Would the Trifecta work for this, or should I look at purchasing two separate products?
———
Horse Guard replied:
Trifecta is not intended as a source of energy, but instead, a complete vitamin and mineral supplement. It is also only manufactured and formulated for horses in mind, we suggest you consult your veterinarian before feeding any of our products to species other than horses, mules, or donkeys. That being said there is a hoof supplement in Trifecta but you may be better off looking into Hoof & Hair Guard and having your veterinarian look it over to see if it would work for your goat.

Yes, Trifecta has a low dosage of sugar compared to the rest of the diet, low starch, and safe for metabolic horses. It’s a great way for your miniature horse to receive a multivitamin, probiotic & prebiotic supplement, a joint supplement, and a hoof supplement.

Thank you for the question. I missed what the 1 pound is you are feeding, but if it isn’t a ration balancer you should be good. Complete feeds are generally safe to feed with Trifecta when the complete feed is fed at less than 4 pounds per day. If you would like to send me exactly what it is I would be more than happy to give you a for sure answer.

The alfalfa pellets are great to feed with Trifecta.

Let me know if I can answer anymore questions.

Sincerely,

Thank you for the question. Yes, Trifecta takes the place of the ration balancer. If could add some alfalfa or timothy pellets to give him that “grain” satisfaction.

Let me know if I can answer anymore questions.

My senior gelding is currently fed Enrich ration balancer along with his hay. He has been getting Trifecta as well, but my vet said that is likely doubling up on a lot of vitamins/minerals. Does Trifecta take the place of a ration balancer?

Karley,
Thank you for your question. Yes, it is safe to add magnesium with Trifecta. You can just add it to your current feed regime.
Let me know if I can answer any more questions.

Our 14 year old quarter horse has been on Trifecta for years. He has become a little anxious and was wondering if it is safe to add an additional magnesium supplement to his diet? He currently is on alfalfa/orchard mix, 2 scoops of Trifecta, and Timothy pellets.

I currently feed Platinum Performance GI and this seems to be doing well what would be the equivalent in Horseguard products? My horses are young and easy keepers.
